I am working on lots of little jobs at the moment. Cremation tablets and house signs are the order of the day. I carved this number on friday for a retired architect I have worked for from time to time. It is based on a font he sourced. I don’t know which one but I will let you know if I find out. It is unusual to carve u shaped letters like this instead of v shaped letters. And rather effective I think with bold forms like these. What I particularly like about these are the shapes of the negative forms, inside and between the numbers. They put me in mind of the prints of the Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chilida. A master of positive and negative forms and a great sculptor of spaces.
Its taken a while to take and load up a good photograph, but here it is finally completed. October was completely mad and I’ve got a bit behind on posting all the news – I will try and catch up this week with some pictures of the unveiling, which was a wonderful event, and also the show at Walcot Chapel.
